The religious complex dedicated to the Penitents, consisting of the boarding school and the relative church, was built starting from 1705 with the aim of hosting young girls who had decided to leave prostitution and try to redeem themselves. Originally the headquarters of this center for the collection of young lost souls was located in another area of the city, in the district of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and only two years after its construction it was realized that the building that housed the girls was insufficient to gather the countless women who asked for hospitality.
