In Venice, he was the driving force behind Roman classicism and 'proto' of the Republic, a position he held until his death.

Jacopo Tatti, born in Florence in 1486, inherited from his master Andrea Contucci not only the artistic knowledge but also the nickname Sansovino. His studies alternated between Rome and the Tuscan capital and one of his first works as a student was the tomb monument dedicated to Cardinal Michiel in S. Marcello al Corso.
