Its construction, together with that of the nearby convent later entrusted to the Augustinian nuns, is presumed to have taken place immediately after 1512 on the senatorial decree of the Serenissima. the place where it was erected was the result of an activity of landscaping of the then marshy area, aimed at hosting a new civil settlement, new houses and a new pole of spiritual life.

The walls of the church and monastery were raised in 1525 and, only in 1543, was it dedicated to St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin (there is still a trace of the thing, thanks to an incision on the right side of the entrance portal. The works inside the place of worship were only completed in 1563 when the main altar was built thanks to the donation of the Grimani family, who also built a mausoleum entitled to Doge Marino Grimani.

The convent and the church belonged to the Augustinian Order until 1801 to then pass, after the Napoleonic suppressions, to the French Salesian Sisters of the Visitation.
