San Francesco della Vigna: upper part of the main facade. (Marco Trevisan, Bazmannn+Venipedia)

The place of worship consecrated to St Francis of Assisi, considered by the faithful to be the man of dialogue.
In spite of its somewhat secluded location, this church is a real jewel with its Palladian façade, as well as the convent with its marvellous interior cloisters. Of particular richness is the adjoining library, consisting, among others, of volumes on Christian denominations and dialogue between these and with other religions.

The area where the church of San Francesco della Vigna is located remained largely uninhabited for a long time and the only activities detected seem to be some warehouses used for timber.

The primitive church and monastery of San Francesco were founded in 1253 by the order of friars minor or preachers. At the behest of the Doge Andrea Gritti, the radical reconstruction of the temple was opted for; the Doge himself had at heart the revaluation of this area of the Castello district, also because he himself had some properties in the area (above all the Nunciature building).
