Before it passed to the Jesuits, this place of worship was in the hands of the Crucifers in about 1200, as were a monastery and a hospital. Due to their customs not being approved by the curia, the Cruciferous were expelled from the monastery at the end of the 1400s and tried to have Franciscan nuns and other religious take over, but to no avail. In 1514, the building fell prey to the flames and Pius V donated the property to the Cruciferous once again, believing in their conscientious behaviour. This did not happen and so many of their properties were suppressed by Alexander X.
