The campo takes its name from the adjacent church dedicated to the saint Luigi Ludovico d'Angiò, known in Venice as Alvise, whom, according to tradition, the Venetian noblewoman Antonia Venier saw in a dream in the 16th century. It is said that the saint, who was bishop of Toulouse, showed her where to build the temple dedicated to him. In addition to the church, Venier also built a monastery at her own expense, to which she retired to practise St Augustine's teachings.
