Tra i rarissimi documenti redatti e firmati da una donna e ancora conservati c’è un atto di vendita datato 16 aprile 1044 e redatto, con un’elegante e regolare minuscola carolina, da Alba, figlia di un grammatico italiano e moglie di Guifredus.

Sigla la pergamena di suo pugno “Alba femina scripsit”, scrivendo il suo nome in forma ben visibile, scandendo le lettere con grande modulo, tradendo forse un malcelato orgoglio per quella sua perizia, rara tra gli uomini e ancor più rara nelle donne.

La scrittura delle donne si rintraccia nelle transazioni di denari e oggetti, nell’amministrazione dei beni, attività che, specie nelle vedove, spronavano le donne a impadronirsene.
