The idea of establishing a museum within the Basilica of St. Mark came to Pietro Saccardo, Proto of St. Mark's from 1887.The original plan, interrupted after the fall of the bell tower in 1902, was to gather the exhibition material inside the rooms above the narthex in the north-west wing.
