Situated in a quiet area, far from the traditional tourist circuit, today the Scuola Vecchia della Misericordia is the headquarters of the Direzione Regionale Musei del Veneto (formerly the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della città di Venezia e dei comuni della Gronda lagunare).
Inside, there is a beautiful cloister and a well-kept garden typical of Venetian convents, open to the public only occasionally.

The School owes its name to the Brotherhood of Mercy that settled in the area from 1308. The number of believers expanded to such an extent that, after only two years, they began to establish their own premises for the faithful. A cloister and a magnificent garden open to members were also built. The height of splendour was in the 15th century and began in the 1480s with the construction of a hospice. Then, in 1411, an inn was established at the back of the Scuola and soon a bridge was built to connect the Campo de l'Abazia with the Fondamenta della Misericordia.
