The Scuola dei Carmini is the last of the eight Scuole Grandi that have existed in Venice since the fall of the Republic, both in terms of the date of its foundation and the date on which the title 'Grande' was recognised. The Confraternity was the only one to also welcome women within its ranks.
.
Today, the Scuola organises museum visits, religious and cultural events in its halls.

The Carmini School was established in 1594, precisely on 1 March. It was "baptized" Confraternita sive scola di laity under the name of the Glorious Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel by Bernardin Soardi, fabric manufacturer or trader (tellarol in Venetian) and a native of Bergamo. During the papacy of Clement VIII and the doge of Pasquale Cicogna, Soardi was officially appointed prior of the newly born Confraternity.

At the beginning, the Confraterna was housed in the church and convent belonging to the Carmelites "of ancient observance", in Campo dei Carmini in the Dorsoduro district
