Marco Antonio (or Marcantonio) Sabellico, whose real name was Marc'Antonio Coccia (or Coccio), was born in Vicovaro, in the province of Rome, around the year 1436, probably to a wealthy family. He was a scholar and humanist in every sense of the word: poet, man of letters, historian, expert in ancient Greek as well as scientific and mathematical texts, and a tireless producer of numerous substantial works, several of which are very important for Venetian history and culture.
