Tommaso Giannotti was born on 16 August 1493 in Ravenna into a bourgeois family that allowed him to study mathematics, literature and astrology in his city of origin and to continue with a university degree in 'artibus et medicinae' in Bologna in 1516; the humanistic nicknames of "Philologus" or in its Latin form "Janothus" date back to these years and were replaced by the more general suffix "Rhavennas" from 1525 onwards.Thanks to the support of Cardinal Domenico Grimani, the young physician Giannotti moved to Rome where he taught sophistry, philosophy and astron
