Salt was, for centuries, a fundamental element in the life of Venetians: besides being a perfect bargaining chip, it allowed optimal preservation of food, at a time when the refrigerator did not exist.
It was precisely the need for a place to store large quantities of this foodstuff that led to the construction of these buildings.

This huge monumental complex was built approximately at the beginning of the 15th century in a nerve center of the city: in fact, along these foundations, there was one of the main landing places for boats that brought materials and goods to Venice. The first certain date of the building's existence dates back to 20 October 1531, as Sanudo testified in his Diaries, and is reported in a decree of the Serenissima that authorized the start of the restoration of the place to avoid the collapse of part of the roofing.
