Jacopo Negretti, known as Palma il Vecchio, was born in Serina, in the Brembana Valley, around 1480.Shortly after 1500 he came to the lagoon land, probably like many other young men who wanted to complete their apprenticeship in Venice.
A will from 1510 mentions him first living in S. Giovanni in Bragora, then moved by 1513 to S. Basso, near S. Marco. It was at this time that the painter took the nickname Palma, whose appellation ‘Vecchio’ was only added from 1584 onwards by Borghini, to distinguish him from his nephew of the same name.
