Pietro Gallo was born in Lissaro di Mestrino, then in the province of Vicenza and now Padua, on 27 December 1841, to Bernardo and Stefania Guerra. There is no precise information about the family, although one can guess a bourgeois extraction: little Pietro was sent to study in Venice at the Liceo-convitto 'Santa Caterina' (which after 1866 would take the name 'Marco Foscarini'). It is probable that young Pietro had a strong Risorgimento feeling, and in 1860 - when he did his military service under the Austrian administration - he preferred to escape from Venice and go to Turin to enrol in the
