His life, work and thinking have always been characterised by a duality that traces his existence in Argentina and France and his belief in a bipolarity between the everyday and the unreal world.
It was precisely this existential duality that brought the author closer to Venice, defining it "una especie de mil y una noches increíble" and dedicating a short story and a poem to it.

Julio Florencio Cortázar Descotte was born in Brussels on 26 August 1914. The writer's father, Julio José Cortázar, was part of a trade mission at the Argentine embassy in Belgium and, freshly married, had taken his wife María Herminia Descotte with him. To escape the war, the family later fled to Switzerland and then to Barcelona.
