A place of worship located on the route from Rialto to Campo San Polo.
In a portico near the church, a perpetually lit lantern and a capital attract the attention of passers-by: according to tradition, they commemorate Pope Alexander III, who, tired from his journey, took to his bed in this place before meeting Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa.

The church was built towards the middle of the 11th century and dedicated to Sant'Apollinare, vulgo S. Aponal, thanks to donations from the Rampan (or Rampani) and Scievola (or Sievoli) families of Ravenna. It underwent some renovations that changed its original appearance: the first took place towards the middle of the 15th century while the second towards the end of the 16th century.

In the early nineteenth century under Napoleonic rule, due to subversive decrees, it was suppressed and stripped of all its works and was converted into a night shelter for the poor, then a welder
