Nicolò di Pietro, commissioned by the Tuscan merchant Francesco Amadi, created, in 1408, an image of the "Virgin and Child between two Saints" and its owner decided to place this work outside his home.
Immediately this image, considered sacred and miraculous, attracted many devotees and the Senate of the Republic ordered its owner Amadi to find him another accommodation.
There was a collection among the people to raise a sufficient sum for the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Madonna.
The design and construction work was entrusted to Pietro Lom
