In memory of Caterina's lively life, Gaetano Donizetti created an opera dedicated to her.

Caterina Cornaro (Italianisation of the Venetian surname Corner), belonging to one of the wealthiest and most powerful Venetian families, was presumably born on 25 November 1454. The daughter of Marco di Giorgio, a direct descendant of the doge of the same name, and Fiorenza di Nicolò Crispo, Duchess of Naxos and niece of the Emperor of Trebizond, she spent her childhood peacefully in her father's residence and then went to a monastery at the age of 10.
