The origin of the name of this church certainly recalls the doge Vitale Falier, who contributed greatly to its first construction.
A prestigious man has found rest in this place of worship: the famous Venetian composer Baldassare Galuppi, known as Buranello, was buried here. For the famous musician, the island of lace represented his homeland.

The church was built in 1084 by the will of the doge Vitale Falier who dedicated it to his homonymous saint. It underwent a first remodeling in the 12th century during which the bell tower was also put in hand and a second alteration took place in the 15th century.

More substantial interventions were started at the end of the seventeenth on the intention of the heirs of Doge Francesco Morosini who wanted to build him a funeral monument but then due to internal disagreements within the family, everything was wrecked and nothing was done.
