Located a few steps away from the San Tomà vaporetto stop and a ferry service of the same name, its imposing façade stands out against the field that welcomes it.

The building apparently dates back to the 10th century and was built on land once owned by the Tonisto family. Dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle (San Tomà in Venetian), in the following centuries it underwent several alterations and was practically rebuilt in 1395. Further refurbishment works were carried out in the sixteenth century which mainly concerned the decorative rather than the architectural part.

The façade, probably designed by Baldassare Longhena, was erected in the first half of the 17th century by Giuseppe Sardi thanks to the donation of Francesco Alborelli. This
