Fires, decay and reconstructions have marked the building's architectural structure, pleasantly overlooking the Grand Canal.
The building's past, peopled with curious characters and anecdotes, makes it an unmissable stop for anyone visiting Venice.
The building's architecture is also a must for visitors.

The church was built, for the first time, around the year 1000 on the initiative of the Bondù family and was dedicated to San Matteo Apostolo. It was destroyed by two fires, one in 1005 and one in 1007 and rebuilt. Six centuries later, due to a strong structural deterioration of the building, it was rebuilt almost from scratch in 1683. From the previous version to the new one, only the 15th century Gothic apse, the three-nave layout and the ancient portico were kept. Finally, under the Napoleonic dominion, the church was used as the oratory of Santo Stefano.
