Since time immemorial, this sacred place has had a special significance for sailors, as the top of its bell tower was the last thing they saw as they sailed away from the city to distant lands, and the first magical apparition on their return home.
It is no coincidence that it was dedicated to St Nicholas in Venetian Nicolas, bishop of Myra in Lycia (present-day Turkey), protector of sailors.

When Venice won the Lepanto war in 1571, the bells of the bell tower of San Nicolò were the first to announce the great victory, as the Benedictine fathers were the first to see the ships returning to the lagoon.

The church of S. Nicolò is located north of the Lido of Venice, near the tip of the same name that controls the mouth of the port where there is also the Nicelli Airport.

The original building was erected around the middle of the 11th century during the stave of Domenico Contarini and was inaugurated in 1053. Structured with three naves with three apsidal
