With a very modest beginning, over the centuries the Parish of San Lorenzo became one of the richest in Venice, thanks to the talents of the young novices. This is where Marco Polo was buried, albeit with an unfortunate epilogue.

It is said that the church was founded in ancient times between the sixth and seventh centuries while it is known from historical sources that, thanks to the contribution of the patrician Partecipazio family, in the ninth century the convent of Benedictine nuns was built in the current Campo San Lorenzo; therefore, some scholars believe that the church of San Lorenzo was built later, in the service of the monastery. In 853 the bishop Orso Partecipazio donated the religious place with a testamentary bequest.
