In the Crucifixion (now lost) of 1436, painted for Verona Cathedral, the painter signed himself a pupil of Gentile da Fabriano, who had stayed in Venice between 1408 and 1414. Perhaps Jacopo had also accompanied his master to Florence in the third decade of the century, thus establishing contact with early Renaissance masters such as Paolo Uccello, Leon Battista Alberti, Andrea del Castagno and Donatello.
In 1437 he became confrere of the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista and four years later was appointed dean for the sestiere of San Marco.
