The Basilica del Redentore and the Giudecca canal (Luca Aless).

Giving thanks to Christ the Redeemer for defeating the plague: this was the noble motive that led to the construction of this church. For almost five centuries, this event has been commemorated every third Sunday in July: the Giudecca is filled with Venetians and non-Venetians, and a bridge of boats connects the island to the rest of the city. On Saturday night, a highly spectacular and exciting fireworks display is traditionally organised.

Built between 1576 and 1577 at the decision of the Senate of the Serenissima to thank Christ the Redeemer for having defeated the plague, which caused almost fifty thousand victims.Even before the complete construction of the temple, there were already many faithful on pilgrimage; the first procession took place on 21 July 1577, and since then, on every third Sunday in July, a bridge of boats connects the Giudecca to the rest of the city.
