How often do you hear people say among the calli: 'Ciò, andémo béver un'ombra!'...?
It is an invitation that has been handed down for generations and is gladly accepted especially by those who do not disdain good wine; by 'ombra' (literally: shadow) is meant a glass of wine.
But where does this expression come from?
In the sestiere of S. Polo there was the trattoria Alla speranza, closed in 1907, where in 1889, people began to call a tenth of wine 'ombra'. Many think that this is the origin of the saying, but it is actually another one.
