'A man of great prudence and goodness', possibly brother of Doge Peter IV. The new doge was forced to abdicate due to a serious illness and entered the Convent of St. Hilary, where he died four days later.

He had been the main instigator of the uprising that led to the deposition of his predecessor Domenico Selvo (1071-1084).

He belonged to one of the 12 so-called Apostolic families.

Son of Doge Dominic (1118-30). The Dogado of Vitale II went through critical years for Venetian politics.

He owes his love for music to his violinist father Giovanni Battista who played for some years in the chapel of San Marco; he seems to have been a pupil of the musician Giovanni Legrenzi.
