The building that today houses the Prado National Museum was designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785 and initially built to house the Natural History Cabinet, by order of King Charles III. It was thanks to the decision of King Ferdinand VII, encouraged by his wife, Queen Maria Isabel de Braganza, that it became the new Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures, soon to be renamed National Museum of Paintings and Sculptures and finally into National Museum of the Prado.The opened to the public on 19 November 1819, with a catalogue of 311 paintings - although by that time its collection
