The building was started by the well-known architect Baldassare Longhena at the request of the Bon family who underestimated the expenses to invest every single fund in it; despite their efforts, after a certain period of time during which only the first floor was built, the landlords were forced to sell it, due to lack of liquidity, to the powerful Rezzonico family for 60,000 ducats.

Giovanni Battista Rezzonico restarted the works and entrusted them to Giorgio Massari who did not distort Longhena's original project except in the arrangement of the ballroom which was enlarged over the entire width of the building. This room, including the access staircase, is considered the most important and prestigious private setting in Venice, full of frescoes by the greatest painters of the century. In 1756 the works on the facade, the atrium and the monumental staircase were completed, through which you enter the ballroom. The imposing facade is on three levels, with ashlar on the ground floor and the two noble floors framed by coupled columns, with arched windows and sculptures on the vaults.
