One of the earliest and most important followers and interpreters of Caravaggio.
A cultured, well-to-do man of French taste, he was nicknamed the 'Venetian' during his stay in Rome.

Carlo Saraceni, a Venetian-born painter, arrived in Rome at the age of about twenty, around 1598 - 1600 and stayed there for about two decades where he gathered praise and success. When his time in the papal city was over, he returned to his hometown and a few months later died, aged 40, in 1620. During his stay in the Capitoline city, Saraceni was a pupil of the sculptor Cesare Mariani and grew closer and closer to the circle of Caravaggio's admirers.
