Son of Doge Vitale, he continued his work in the Holy Land, helping the Crusaders with his fleet and fighting the Normans.
However, he also had to contend with Coloman, King of Hungary (1095-1116), who crowned himself King of Croatia and aimed to open an outlet to the Adriatic. The new doge sent troops to occupy Split, Zadar and other key points along the coast.
