Son of Doge Vitale, he continued his work in the Holy Land, helping the Crusaders with his fleet and fighting the Normans.
However, he also had to contend with Coloman, King of Hungary (1095-1116), who crowned himself King of Croatia and aimed to open an outlet to the Adriatic. The new doge sent troops to occupy Split, Zadar and other key points along the coast.
He is remembered for the new Golden Pall he ordered in Constantinople immediately after his election, for having strengthened the Doge's Castle, attempting to make it impregnable with towers, moats and drawbridges, and above all for having founded the Arsenal (1104) with the intention of planning the construction of war galleys, in his own shipyard modelled on Byzantine precedents, and thus opposing Hungarian power and arrogance.
The doge personally led the war against Zadar but died in battle. His body was brought to Venice and buried in the atrium of St. Mark's Church. It is not known exactly where.
A curiosity about this doge: he was left-handed and wrote from right to left, in fact Ordelaf would be none other than Faledro, the name by which the chronicles sometimes refer to his family.
