Lorenzo Lotto, son of Tommaso, was born in Venice in 1480, as can be seen from his will of 1546 where he states that he is 'Venetiano [...] de circha anni 66'.
According to the famous art critic Bernard Berenson, the artist completed his apprenticeship with Alvise Vivarini.

Various documents testify to Lorenzo's presence in Treviso in the early 16th century and the Madonna and Child, Saint Peter Martyr and Saint John painted for Bishop Bernardo de' Rossi dates from this period; the Pala di Santa Cristina (Treviso) and the Pala di Asolo date from 1506. In the same year he signed the contract for the polyptych of the high altar of the church of San Domenico in Recanati, thus leaving the Veneto city temporarily. Two years later, the Polittico di Recanati was finished and he maintained relations with the Marche city, probably working on the Transfiguration for Santa
