Gaspara Stampa was born in Padua in 1523 into a wealthy family of Milanese origin (her father was a goldsmith) that provided her, her sister Cassandra and her brother Baldassarre with a good intellectual education. She studied Latin and possibly also Greek, rhetoric and grammar, was educated in singing and could play the lute, proving to be a talented musician.
