Some sources attest to the presence of a church dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus between the fifth and sixth centuries, above which the current votive temple to St. Peter will be built. The construction of the cathedral that would have replaced the old church is set around the middle of the ninth century (tradition has it that the exact year is 841).
