In the preface to the collection of poems entitled 'Veneziane' by Giuseppe Canali, Trilussa - an Italian poet, writer and journalist - writes: 'If the verses that you collect in this volume are all those that you read to me the other evening and of which I retain a delightful memory, your rhymes will not fail to succeed. They are witty, clear, spontaneous and lyrically render the thoughts, images and sentimental longings of the Venetian muse'.

Giuseppe Canali, painter and poet, was born in Venice on 21 March 1885.After taking private classical lessons at home, due to his father's excessive sense of protection, he began to frequent the studio of the family friend Alessandro Milesi, who would become his favourite teacher and would always be remembered by him with affection and gratitude. As the years went by, he also attended the studios of Ettore Tito, of Guglielmo Ciardi and the Academies of Venice, Milan, Rome and Florence.He spent some time in Modena (where he got to know Ubaldo Magnavacca and his etchings), returned to Venice and
