The Ateneo Veneto - according to its Statute - is:

an institution that, in the exclusive pursuit of aims of social solidarity, aims to cooperate in the process and dissemination of science, letters, arts and culture, in all their manifestations. Within the scope of its aims, it promotes the study of anything that has a particular relation to the conditions, needs and interests of Venice and the Veneto area. It looks after its three major historical structures: Archives, Library and Art Collections.

Origins

The origins of the Ateneo Veneto can be traced back to two different moments as the historical periods in which it was established and constituted are different.


The founding moment corresponds to the period immediately following the issue of the Napoleonic decree of 25 December 1810. This provided for the closure of the old academies and the opening of a single Athenaeum in each city, as well as a single national institute, which were to be structured on the tripartition of knowledge into the classes of Sciences, Letters and Arts, taken from the Enlightenment culture of the encyclopaedia.
