Il racconto di Marco Polo, cresciuto in una famiglia di mercanti, ci accompagna con vivacità, facendoci partecipi del suo viaggio e delle sue scoperte, in mercati ricchi di ogni sorta di beni, di spezie associate a consumi alimentari diversi da quelli che aveva lasciato in patria. Il suo occhio esperto valuta rendite di zucchero e di pepe, confronta particolari usi monetari, annota tecniche estrattive e ci incanta narrandoci la pesca delle perle, favorita dagli incantatori di pesci.

Luca Molà è docente di Storia del Rinascimento e dell'Europa Moderna all'European University Institute di Firenze. Ha pubblicato La comunità dei mercanti lucchesi a Venezia nel tardo Medioevo, Venezia 1994; The Silk Industry of Renaissance Venice, Baltimore-London 2000; e ha curato i volumi La seta in Italia dal Medioevo al Seicento, Venezia 2000, e Il Rinascimento italiano e l’Europa. Volume 3. Produzione e tecniche, Treviso 2007. È stato uno dei curatori della sezione italiana della mostra Sulla Via della Seta. Antichi sentieri tra Oriente e Occidente, Roma 27 ottobre 2012 -10 marzo 2013 e del relativo catalogo.
