It has become a tradition that the Venetian carnival officially opens at noon on the first Sunday of carnival with the 'Svolo del Turco', also called 'Volo dell'Angelo' or 'Volo della Colombina'.This is among the oldest carnival festivities handed down from the Venetian Republic. Indeed, it seems that during a carnival in the mid-1500s, a young Turk, an acrobat by trade, performed a feat never before seen in Venice. From a boat firmly anchored in the pier, in front of the Piazzetta, the acrobat managed to reach the belfry of St Mark's Campanile, walking on a rope only with the help of a barbel
