One of the greatest medallists of the Serenissima, he produced medals at the Venice Mint. A skilled craftsman, he engraved medals for monarchs, religious and commemorative medals for great historical occasions.

Luigi Ferrari was born in Vicenza (probably in Marostica) in 1772 to Michele Angelo, a modest 'schioppettajo', and Anna Zampira. The young man's artistic ability led him to move to Venice, probably towards the end of the 18th century. In 1803 he was already employed as an assistant engraver at the local mint, with a salary of 676 florins. Registry records from 1805 show that "Ferrari Luigi [...] Plebeo, incisor in Zecca" lived in Castello, in calle Coppo (parish of Sant'Antonino) with his parents, his wife, the Vicenza-born Ottavia Quadri (born in 1779 to Domenico and Teresa Menighi), and
