The Palazzo dei Capitani in Malcesine, a Gothic-Venetian building erected between the 13th and 14th centuries by the Scaligeri family and renovated by the Miniscalchi family in the 15th century, is a historic symbol of Lake Garda. In 1618, the Municipality of Verona purchased it at the invitation of the Serenissima to make it the residence of the Capitano del Lago, an administrative figure who oversaw the entire basin and collaborated with the Garda Water Federation against illegal trafficking of goods from Venice and other port cities.

Transferred to the municipality of Malcesine in 1854 and declared a national monument in 1902, today this historic palace houses municipal offices, a public library and exhibition spaces, continuing to be an important cultural centre on Lake Garda.
