Monochrome illustration: an etching by Michele Marieschi depicting the monumental entrance to the Arsenale in Venice. A tall banner flies in the centre, whilst in the background the towers and masts of the ships under construction are visible. The square is brought to life by figures of passers-by in 18th-century dress, rendered with detailed contrasting engraved lines.
