The sestiere of San Marco is bounded to the north by the Grand Canal; to the south, where the Piazza overlooks the Venetian Lagoon, by the basin of San Marco; to the west by Rio del Palazzo; and to the east by Rio de San Zulian. The sestiere is bordered to the north by the sestiere of Cannaregio and to the east by the sestiere of Castello, and is connected to the sestiere of San Polo by the Rialto Bridge and to the sestiere of Dorsoduro by the Accademia Bridge. Administratively, the sestiere of San Marco also includes the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
