In 1981 Palazzo Grimani was purchased by the Italian State which in 2001 entrusted it to the Special Superintendence for the Venetian Museum Complex. Following the restorations made to the building, completed in 2008, the Museum of Palazzo Grimani was established.

The focal point of the museum is the history and artistic heritage of the building that was once the main residence of the Grimani family. Despite some of the works in the past were either sold (for example the ancient internal stuccos) or relocated (some are visible at the Archaeological Museum), it is still possible to admire the frescoes in the hall of foliage made by the Mantuan, in addition to the pictorial decorations. of the work of Francesco Salviati, Federico Zuccari, Giovanni da Udine and other successive artists throughout history. The works on display are few and selected, almost all of the sixteenth-century style, in homage to the time when the patriarch of Aquileia Giovanni Grimani took office.

Themed exhibitions, conferences, concerts and other cultural activities are periodically hosted.
