There are two legends that trace the origins of the church back to the 10th century: the first tells us that it was founded by the Bishop of Treviso, Count and Marquis of the Mestre estate, while the other associates the dedication to the saint with the victory over the Hungarians on St Lawrence's Day in 955. Certainly, the first official document dates back to 1152 and identifies Pope Eugene III who mentions the church of San Lorenzo as being under the management of the Bishop of Treviso, Boniface, and his future successors; in 1192, from another source, it is deduced that at that time the temple had an arcade in which the religious eminence exercised civil and jurisdictional powers. From the end of the 13th century and certainly until the middle of the 15th century, the church of San Lorenzo was the seat of one of the four archpriestships into which the diocese of Treviso was divided - the other three were Quinto, Castelfranco and Cornuda - and 10 minor churches and their chapels depended on it.
