Pietro discendeva da una nobile famiglia originaria di Eraclea.

Non appena fu eletto doge venne costretto a intraprendere una politica estera fatta di contrapposizioni non soltanto contro le potenze mondiali dell’epoca, cioè l’impero romano d’Oriente, il sacro romano impero e il papato, ma anche contro il re degli ungari che istigava i dalmati alla disubbidienza verso la Repubblica.

Nel 1032, dopo pochi anni di dogado, ridestatisi i contrasti fra le famiglie bramose di potere, Pietro Centranico fu deposto ed esiliato a Costantinopoli, ma prima di lasciare Venezia ricevette l‘umiliazione del taglio della barba e dei capelli che egli stesso aveva imposto al suo predecessore Ottone Orseolo.
