He was 69 years old and belonged to the branch of the family that had the baroque palace on the Grand Canal, Ca' Pesaro, built by Longhena between 1679 and 1718.
In the doge's past there was some stain. At the time of the Castro war (1641) he had abandoned the defence of Pontelagoscuro and allowed his soldiers to indulge in violence and theft.
Prosecuted, he had later rehabilitated himself by arguing in the Senate the need to continue the war against the Turks and offering 6,000 ducats to his homeland.
