Venipedia®

Aveva quasi 75 anni (era nato il 24 ottobre 1601) e apparteneva al ramo di Castello, detto Porta di ferro.

Il suo cursus honorum era segnato da tappe prestigiose: ambasciatore in Olanda (1631), Francia (1633), Spagna (1637), Roma (1645-1648), procuratore di S. Marco de supra (22 ottobre 1653).

Come doge, Alvise mirò soprattutto a sanare il pesante passivo economico accumulato in seguito alle guerre contro i turchi e fu così che nel giro di pochi anni il bilancio statale tornò in attivo (1679).

Durante il suo dogado la veneziana Elena Lucrezia Corner (o Cornaro) Piscopia conseguì, prima donna al mondo, la laurea in filosofia (25 giugno 1678) e a Venezia fu aperto il primo caffè (1683).

Alcuni giorni prima della sua morte Venezia si apprestava a riprendere la guerra contro i turchi, che erano dilagati nella penisola balcanica arrivando ad assediare Vienna nel cuore dell’Europa.
